Construction Update: August 2006

The demolition of the North Wing of the Henry Madden Library has begun! This is the beginning of a two year project to add to and renovate the library. During this time the southern portion of the library will remain open and be accessible through the east side of the atrium. A fence encloses the east, west, and north sides of the library. Though a portion of the Peace Garden is enclosed, the rest of the garden remains open. Because of the demolition of the North Wing, some utilities are being rerouted. This work has required scheduled power outages in the buildings closest to the library. Please take note of the following:
- The demolition of the North Wing began in early August and will be near the end of the clean-up phase by the time the semester begins in late August. It will take approximately two weeks to tear the building down and another two weeks to complete the sorting and removal of debris. Much of the debris will be recycled in keeping with the sustainable practices of the university.
- Trucks hauling away the debris and delivering construction supplies will enter and leave the campus on Barton at Shaw. These are large trucks, so please use caution when walking or driving in this area. This corridor will be affected throughout the two year project.
- All efforts will be made to reduce construction noise. Construction noise levels will be monitored by Environmental Health & Safety to ensure that good practices are followed.
- In order to reduce congestion on campus, construction workers will park in Lot Y on the north side of Barstow. Construction days will be Monday through Friday and weekends as required. A shuttle service will take the workers to the construction site until the end of November at which time the Parking Office intends to have their own shuttle service in place using 10-12 person golf carts. The shuttles will run in shifts from 5:30-7:30 am and from 2-4 pm. The route will be along Barstow, Cedar, Shaw and Barton and will add to traffic congestion, especially on Barstow.
The latest information about the library construction will be available from this website as the project progresses. You can also link from this site to a webcam for viewing the library renovation as it happens.
